“I like that film much more and I actually think it holds up better as a movie. It was a really good takeoff on blaxploitation cinema, and it was obvious that the people who made the movie liked those movies — there's a genuine affection. But there was something else: deep inside the film runs a subtext about the loss of cultural identity that happened to urban Black folks after the soulful '70s, and the movie actually deals with that.”
